“Our sanctuary runs on coffee and volunteers!”
At least that’s the message on the mugs we gifted to our incredible volunteers at the annual appreciation event in December 2024.
It was a pleasure celebrating nearly 50 of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary volunteers that were able to join us.
Over the past 25 years, volunteers have helped us achieve great things, from ROV competitions to film festivals, education programs, and the Haunted Museum. We are so grateful for their contributions!
The evening included food, drinks, and a presentation from volunteer coordinator Sophie Stuart looking back at how volunteers helped enhance the past year and some exciting things to come in 2025. Volunteers then participated in a team trivia challenge where they worked together to answer questions about TBNMS, the National Marine Sanctuary system, and sanctuary staff. There was also a celebration and recognition for the Betty Krueger Volunteer of the Year award, given to Jan Knisely-Simons. Jan has volunteered at TBNMS for the past 10 years and in 2024 she logged 152 service hours.
In 2024, TBNMS had 103 individuals volunteer, contributing a total of 2,569 hours

Volunteers play a crucial role in preserving maritime heritage and sharing knowledge. There are many ways to help, from documenting shipwrecks to acting as ambassadors at events. Contact our volunteer coordinator, Sophie Stuart, at Sophie.Stuart@noaa.gov or (989)-278-8678 to get started.
