Great Lakes Students Get a Sneak Peek of Festival Films

Each January, leading up to the annual Thunder Bay International Film Festival, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary education team brings a sneak peek of ocean and Great Lakes independent films to local students.  From Rogers City to Alcona, Posen to Alpena, our education team embarked on a mission to bring a handful of short films from the festival (mostly unavailable elsewhere) into area schools and local theaters.

These Student Sneak Peeks offer a chance to bring independent short films into classrooms, sparking conversations about the challenges our blue planet faces and inspiring practical ways for youth to make a positive impact.

It’s become a tradition as integral to the festival as the event itself.  Check out a short video featuring the Student Sneak Peeks!

This is also an opportunity to engage youth through the power of film, inspiring conversations about careers in filmmaking and environmental sciences, ocean and Great Lakes research, and our continuous impact on the planet. The education team presented this interactive programming to nearly 400 students at several school districts across northeast Michigan as well as a local Boys & Girls Club.

If you’d like to bring this experience to your classroom next January, email Daniel.Moffatt@noaa.gov to get started.

The Thunder Bay International Film Festival takes place the fourth weekend of January each year.
