Are you interested in getting more involved in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary? Several seats are open on the Sanctuary Advisory Council. The sanctuary is seeking candidates for the following positions:

  • Fishing
  • Higher Education
  • Tourism/Recreation
  • Maritime Industry/Business
  • Citizen-at-Large

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council (council) was established in 1997 pursuant to Federal law to ensure continued public participation in the management of the sanctuary. The council has 15 members and 15 alternates. Five seats represent local community governments, and the other 10 represent facets of the sanctuary community, including education, fishing, diving, tourism, economic development, maritime industry, and the community at large. The council meets bi­monthly, with informal coffees and lunches scheduled for non-meeting months. Working groups meet as needed. The 15 alternates also take an active role in council meetings, as well as assist in carrying out many volunteer assignments throughout the year.

Completed applications are due by March 16, 2018 and should be mailed to Thunder Bay NMS, Attn: Jean Prevo, 500 W. Fletcher Street, Alpena, Michigan 49707. Applications will be reviewed by a preliminary review panel. The panel will help narrow down the number of candidates for each seat to the top three. Selected members will serve a term of three years on the council.
